Brief Haitian History

In 1492 Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain in search for a new route to India. After months of a tumultuous voyage, his quest landed him in a new world and in December 5, 1492 he discovered the island Ayiti, Kiskeya or Bohio as named by the various indigenous inhabitants.

Columbus claimed the territories in the name of Spain and called the island Hispaniola.

Soon, the Spaniards realized that they were in the middle of a gold mine, literally. They began the systematic slaughter of the Indians in order to steal their riches, and quickly enslaved the survivors.

Word spread out fast and soon the British and the French followed.
